Ranking the best hearing in the animal kingdom depends on what “best” means—sensitivity, range, or localization. Greater wax moths hold the record for frequency detection, hearing up to 300 kilohertz—15 times beyond human limits. Barn owls excel at pinpointing prey in darkness, using facial feathers to funnel sound and asymmetrical ears to detect minute timing differences.
Bats and dolphins stand out for echolocation, emitting calls and analyzing returning echoes to map environments with a precision rivaling sonar. Their brains devote extensive processing power to auditory information, and both species have adaptations that prevent them from deafening themselves with their own calls.
Pinnipeds (seals, walruses, and sea lions) may be the most versatile, hearing well both on land and underwater. They adjust their middle ear environment—air on land, blood while diving—to minimize distortion. From moths to mammals, each species has evolved extraordinary hearing suited to its unique survival needs.
