Auburn University’s Veterinary community is mourning the tragic death of Professor Emerita Dr. Julie Gard Schnuelle, described by colleagues and former students as a “bright light” and “force” in the field. Standing just over 5-foot-2, Dr. Schnuelle defied expectations in large animal Veterinary medicine and inspired countless veterinarians throughout her career. She taught at Auburn’s College of Veterinary Medicine from 2003 until her 2021 retirement, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, excellence, and mentorship.
Authorities report she was fatally attacked while walking her dog in Auburn’s Kiesel Park, a place long considered safe by students and residents. The Lee County coroner said her injuries were consistent with a sharp force instrument. Harold Rashad Dabney III, 28, of Montgomery, has been charged with two counts of capital murder in connection with her death. Auburn University expressed deep condolences, honoring Schnuelle’s impact as both an educator and beloved member of the Auburn family.
