Veterinarians across Maine are warning pet owners about a surge in canine Parvovirus cases, a highly contagious and sometimes fatal infection affecting unvaccinated dogs, particularly puppies. Dr. Ai Takeuchi, co-medical director at Eastern Maine Emergency Veterinary Clinic, said her clinic has seen increased cases from summer into fall. Parvovirus attacks rapidly dividing cells in the intestinal tract and bone marrow, causing vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and severe immune suppression.
Cases have been reported in Bangor, Houlton, and other areas, prompting city officials and the Parks and Recreation Department to post warnings at dog parks. Animal control officer Trisha Bruen emphasized the importance of keeping dogs up to date on vaccines, including parvo and distemper, even though rabies is the only one legally required. Dr. Takeuchi warned that the virus can survive in harsh conditions, including frost and snow, urging owners to avoid high-risk areas and contact their vet immediately if symptoms appear.
