Hackensack Meridian Health has partnered with Israeli biotechnology company SpotitEarly to research a groundbreaking method for the early detection of breast cancer using cancer-sniffing dogs combined with artificial intelligence (AI). The study, conducted through the Hennessy Institute for Cancer Prevention and Applied Molecular Medicine, aims to develop a simple, noninvasive diagnostic tool.
SpotitEarly’s process involves patients breathing into a mask that captures volatile organic compounds (VOCs) linked to cancer. The sample is analyzed in a lab where trained beagles detect cancer-related scents, while AI tracks their physiological responses—such as movement and heart rate—to interpret the results. Early detection is vital, as Stage 1 breast cancer has a 99% survival rate. Researchers say success in this project could lead to detection methods for other cancers. The partnership leverages Hackensack Meridian’s large, diverse patient base and SpotitEarly’s innovative AI-driven canine detection technology to improve early cancer diagnosis and outcomes.
