Shelters United has named Dr. Kwane Stewart, a renowned veterinarian and animal welfare advocate, as the Champion of its Veterinarian of Record (VOR) Program, a national initiative that strengthens collaboration between veterinarians and animal welfare organizations (AWOs). The program seeks to expand Veterinary care for homeless pets awaiting adoption and develop sustainable, scalable partnership models. With over 5,000 rescue groups adopting 1.2 million pets annually, the program addresses a critical need for structured veterinary support.
Dr. Stewart, celebrated for his work with underserved communities and homeless animals, brings leadership and visibility to inspire greater Veterinary involvement. The pilot phase will include 25–30 veterinarians and 40–50 AWOs nationwide, supported by corporate partners Mars Veterinary Health and PetSmart Charities. Objectives include increasing new Veterinary clients, improving access to care, and demonstrating measurable community impact. Shelters United will manage onboarding, training, and evaluation, offering recognition and incentives for participating veterinarians.
