UC Davis Health’s Department of Internal Medicine and the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine have received a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) R38 grant to establish the Stimulating Access to Research in Residency (StARR) Program, the nation’s first joint human and Veterinary medicine initiative of its kind. The five-year program aims to strengthen the pipeline of physician- and veterinarian-scientists by offering mentored research opportunities in pulmonary, hematology, and cardiovascular medicine.
Each year, one human and one Veterinary resident will spend two years in research and clinical training, dedicating 80% of their time to research. Participants will earn either a Master of Advanced Study or a certificate upon completion. Co-directors Drs. Michael Schivo, Amir Kol, and Nicholas Kenyon emphasize the program’s interdisciplinary approach, integrating insights across species to advance understanding of heart, lung, and blood diseases. The initiative leverages UC Davis’s dual strengths in medical and Veterinary research to foster innovation and translational discoveries.
