A recent outbreak of Equine Herpesvirus Type 1 (EHV-1) in Texas has prompted major rodeo disruptions, including the cancellation of the PRCA Uvalde Rodeo Qualifier and a temporary shift to an all–bull riding format at the Fort Worth Stockyards Championship Rodeo. The Texas Department of Agriculture issued an alert after veterinarians confirmed cases linked to the Nov. 5–9 WPRA World Championship Barrel Racing Finals in Waco.

To protect animal safety, Cowtown Coliseum suspended all horse events for at least two weeks, with PBR assisting in providing non-equine entertainment. The PRCA also canceled the Prairie Circuit Finals in Kansas. Officials say an aggressive EHV-1 strain spreads easily through direct contact, aerosolized particles, shared equipment, or contaminated human clothing. Symptoms range from fever and respiratory illness to neurological issues and abortion in pregnant mares. Authorities urge isolation of exposed horses, strict biosecurity measures, halted travel, and close veterinary monitoring while investigations continue.
