“Barkitecture,” a trend dubbed by Pinterest in 2021, is gaining popularity in the U.S. as pet owners invest significant resources in designing homes with a focus on their pets’ needs. Fueled by social media, magazines, and home renovation shows, Americans are incorporating custom features such as showers for dogs, electronic pet doors, custom kennels, and pet feeding stations with water faucets into their homes.
The trend has seen a surge during the pandemic, with Americans spending an estimated $137 billion on pet-related purchases in 2022. While some elements of “barkitecture” have been in use for a decade, the trend has witnessed significant growth recently, reflecting the increasing importance of pets in households.
