U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri’s 5th District is urging Veterinary schools across the country to investigate allegations of systemic mistreatment of students. He argues that many programs rely on students as inexpensive labor, leading to extreme workloads and harmful conditions. In a letter sent to 36 Veterinary schools, including the University of Missouri, Cleaver requested information following reports of students working up to 100 hours a week, lacking adequate time for meals or rest, and seeing negative effects on both their health and animal patient care.
He cited anecdotal accounts of students losing weight and suffering from sleep deprivation. Cleaver emphasized that he is not accusing specific schools but is seeking internal reviews and reforms. Many complaints, he said, were submitted anonymously out of fear of retaliation. If conditions do not improve, he is considering federal legislation. The University of Missouri has said it is reviewing the request and plans to respond by December 31.
