An Indiana Senate committee has advanced legislation aimed at easing the state’s Veterinary workforce shortage. Senate Bill 56, authored by Sen. Jean Leising, seeks to expand access to Veterinary care by allowing licensed veterinarians and Veterinary technicians from other states to practice in Indiana more easily. Under the proposal, the Indiana Board of Veterinary Medicine could issue licenses without requiring an additional examination for applicants who already hold licenses and have professional experience elsewhere.
The measure aligns Veterinary professionals with licensing standards already used for other health care fields. Supporters say the shortage is especially severe in large-animal and livestock medicine, limiting options for farmers and potentially affecting animal health and agricultural operations. By reducing licensing barriers, the bill aims to attract out-of-state Veterinary professionals, increase availability of care, and improve service for both companion and farm animals. Following approval by the Senate Committee on Agriculture, the bill now advances to the full Indiana Senate for further debate and consideration.
