Nationwide pet insurance reports a significant rise in pet health emergencies during the winter holidays, based on claims data from more than one million insured pets. December sees a sharp spike in chocolate-related incidents, with claims increasing 182 percent in the final two weeks of the year and average treatment costs around $814. Cases involving pets ingesting foreign objects such as ornaments, ribbons, and toy parts also rise during the holidays and often require surgery, with costs exceeding $3,500.
In addition, rich holiday foods and sudden dietary changes contribute to digestive illnesses like pancreatitis and gastroenteritis, which can cost more than $1,600 to treat on average. To help reduce these risks, Nationwide has released guidance to educate pet owners on common holiday hazards and warning signs to watch for during the season.
