The Kentucky Veterinary Shortage Working Group has finalized an 18-month report addressing the shortage of large animal veterinarians in the state. Currently, only 3% of Kentucky vets specialize in large animals, compared to the national average of 5%. The report suggests several strategies, including starting the Veterinary recruitment process earlier, expanding agricultural education in schools, and encouraging partnerships between agricultural organizations and Veterinary schools.
Other states, like West Virginia, are also addressing Veterinary shortages, with plans to launch a four-year veterinary technology program. The issue is gaining attention at the national level, as the U.S. Senate established its first Senate Veterinary Medicine Caucus earlier this year. The report’s recommendations will likely be discussed in Kentucky’s upcoming legislative session.
