During National Blood Donor Month, Colorado State University and UCHealth are urging both people and pets to donate blood amid ongoing shortages in Northern Colorado. At CSU’s Veterinary teaching hospital in Fort Collins, dogs and cats are critically needed as blood donors to support emergency and critical care cases. One example is Cora, a five-year-old golden retriever who regularly donates blood and helps illustrate how calm and straightforward the process can be for animals.
Donor pets receive health screenings, gentle handling, and treats, and families are rewarded with free pet food. Veterinarians emphasize that animals, like humans, have multiple blood types, making a diverse donor pool essential. CSU operates a full Veterinary blood bank and uses blood products daily to save lives. Meanwhile, UCHealth continues to seek human donors to meet regional hospital needs.
