Beyond the ceremony, groundhogs have several unusual traits. Their teeth grow continuously, requiring constant gnawing to keep them from becoming too long. They are also skilled diggers, creating complex underground burrow systems with multiple chambers and long tunnel networks. While excavating, groundhogs have occasionally uncovered important archaeological sites. In addition, they play a role in medical research, as their biology helps scientists study liver disease. Groundhogs are widespread across North America and are known by many names, including woodchuck and whistle-pig, reflecting their distinctive sounds and stocky appearance.
