A newly approved medication, GS-441524, is offering hope to cats diagnosed with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a disease once considered a death sentence. For years, the drug showed high success rates but was illegal in the U.S., leaving veterinarians unable to recommend it and forcing desperate pet owners to seek unregulated sources. Now legalized, GS-441524 can be prescribed as an 84-day treatment, administered either by daily injections or oral medication.
Though demanding, especially with injections, veterinarians say it provides a real chance at survival. FIP has two main forms—dry and wet—with symptoms ranging from fever and weight loss to fluid buildup and breathing difficulties, and it can also affect the eyes and nervous system. Many cats show improvement within days of starting treatment. After completing therapy, cats enter remission and are monitored for another 84 days. Veterinarians say the approval marks a dramatic and life-saving shift in FIP care.
