During Women’s History Month, Dr. Ashton Sellers is making history as the first Black woman to own an animal hospital in the Kansas City area and the youngest woman to do so at age 32. She now leads Hickman Mills Animal Hospital, a clinic that has served the community since 1957 and had only three previous owners. Sellers described ownership as a major shift in responsibility, requiring a new mindset as she oversees all aspects of the business, staff, and patient care.
Her achievement reflects years of determination and ambition, qualities her family says she demonstrated from a young age. After quietly operating the clinic, she plans a public celebration featuring an open house and community recognition. Local leaders praised her milestone as an inspiring example of perseverance and representation, particularly for young Black women pursuing careers in science and business. Sellers hopes her story encourages others to pursue their goals, emphasizing that success is attainable with dedication and vision.
