A rural Alberta community is taking a do-it-yourself approach to address a severe shortage of livestock veterinarians. Paintearth County and the Town of Coronation invested about $55,000 to convert a former pipeline facility into a licensed Veterinary clinic, hoping to attract a full-time vet and reduce long travel times for ranchers.
The region, heavily dependent on cattle farming, faces significant challenges during critical periods alike calving season, when delayed care can threaten animal health and livelihoods. The new clinic can also serve visiting veterinarians, improving access and flexibility. The initiative comes amid a broader veterinary shortage in Alberta, with hundreds of vacancies and projections of worsening gaps. While the investment has drawn some criticism, experts say innovative, community-driven solutions like this could help retain veterinarians, improve rural animal care, and support the agricultural economy.
