Cases of bobcat fever, a serious tick borne disease in cats, are rising in Oklahoma’s Green Country, prompting concern among veterinarians and pet owners. The disease, also known as cytauxzoonosis, is transmitted by Lone Star ticks and can become fatal quickly, sometimes within 48 hours of severe symptoms. Although once nearly always deadly, current treatments offer about a 50 percent survival rate if caught early.
Veterinarians report a possible increase in cases this spring, likely due to earlier tick activity and more widespread exposure. Symptoms include lethargy, fever, breathing difficulty, and pale or yellowed gums. Treatment requires intensive care and is not always successful. Experts recommend regular tick checks, using tick prevention products, and consulting veterinarians for proper protection, noting even indoor cats can be at risk.
