The Westminster Kennel Club opened nominations for the 2026 Veterinarian of the Year Award on April 25, aligning with World Veterinary Day. Now in its fifth year, the award, presented with Purina Pro Plan Veterinary, honors veterinarians who make significant contributions to animal care while highlighting challenges in the profession. Nominations run through May 21, followed by the selection of four regional finalists. For the first time, the public will participate by voting for their favorite finalist in June.
The winner will receive yearlong recognition and a $10,000 donation to a Veterinary-related charitable partner. The initiative is part of Westminster Cares, which supports canine health, education, rescue, and responsible ownership. The 2025 award drew over 300 nominations nationwide, with Dr. Sara K. Lyle named the winner. Overall, the program aims to celebrate Veterinary excellence while strengthening awareness of the profession’s impact on animal welfare.
