A “Case of the Month” highlights how total hip replacement surgery transformed the life of a young dog named Andy, who suffered from severe hip dysplasia. Initially, Andy showed abnormal behavior and pain as a puppy, leading to a diagnosis confirmed by X-rays. His condition worsened over time despite medical management, eventually requiring surgical intervention at a Veterinary teaching hospital.
After exploring options, his owners chose total hip replacement as the most effective long-term solution. The procedure replaced the damaged joint with metal implants, followed by careful monitoring, medication, and strict activity restrictions during recovery. Andy gradually regained strength and mobility over several months.
By his six-month checkup, the implants were stable, and he was able to return to normal activities. His owners report that he is now pain-free, active, and much happier, emphasizing the significant improvement in his quality of life after surgery.
