Authorities in Colorado seized nearly 100 bison from the Lay Valley Bison Ranch in Moffat County during an animal neglect investigation involving deteriorating conditions and concerns about animal welfare. The Moffat County Sheriff’s Office said it removed approximately 90 bison and one mule after working for weeks with ranch owner Daniel Martin, 83, to address care issues.
Investigators reported finding emaciated animals and numerous bison bones scattered across the property. The mule was euthanized due to severe suffering, while two bison died during the seizure operation and two additional animals were euthanized to prevent further pain. Martin now faces multiple misdemeanor animal cruelty charges. Veterinary professionals are evaluating and treating the surviving animals with assistance from the Colorado Bureau of Animal Protection and the State Veterinary Office.
