Officials in Sylacauga, Alabama, are exploring humane solutions to address a growing population of feral dogs along Highway 280, where roaming animals have raised safety concerns for motorists and residents. The Greater Birmingham Humane Society (GBHS) has stepped in to assist, describing the situation as unusually severe and warning that it could eventually lead to a serious incident if left unaddressed.
Rather than pursuing euthanasia, which city leaders have removed from consideration, GBHS has proposed a trapping strategy that would first relocate feeding activity away from the highway. The plan involves establishing feeding stations in safer locations, allowing dogs to become accustomed to gathering there before conducting coordinated trapping efforts. Humane Society officials emphasized that community cooperation will be critical to the program’s success and urged residents who may be feeding the dogs to stop, arguing that the practice unintentionally contributes to the problem.
The Sylacauga City Council is awaiting a formal proposal from GBHS and will determine next steps after reviewing the organization’s recommendations.
