The FDA has issued an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for Ivomec (ivermectin) injectable solution to help prevent infestations caused by New World screwworm (NWS) larvae in cattle. Based on available scientific evidence, the agency determined that Ivomec may be effective when administered within 24 hours of birth, at the time of castration, or when a wound appears. The FDA concluded that the potential benefits outweigh the known and potential risks during the current NWS threat.
Ivomec is available over the counter and does not require a prescription. However, it cannot be used in dairy cattle producing milk for human consumption or in calves intended for veal production. Cattle treated with Ivomec must observe a 35-day slaughter withdrawal period.
The authorization remains in effect until revoked or until federal authorities determine the NWS emergency has ended. Producers are encouraged to use Ivomec responsibly and only when medically necessary to reduce the risk of antiparasitic resistance and maintain its effectiveness against NWS and other parasites.
