Veterinary emergency clinicians in Maine are warning pet owners about several seasonal hazards affecting dogs this spring, particularly toxic exposures and porcupine encounters. One of the most serious concerns is xylitol poisoning from sugar-free gum. Even a small amount can trigger a massive insulin release in dogs, causing dangerously low blood sugar, seizures, and, in some cases, fatal liver failure. Pet owners are encouraged to check ingredient labels and keep gum out of reach.
Veterinarians are also seeing an increase in inhaler toxicities as dogs chew asthma inhalers and receive a concentrated dose of medication, leading to severe tremors, neurological symptoms, elevated heart rates, and blood pressure changes. These cases often require intensive emergency treatment but can be successfully managed with prompt Veterinary care.
Another growing concern is porcupine quill injuries. Emergency clinics are treating multiple quill-related cases nightly, and quills lodged in the chest or abdomen can be life-threatening. Veterinarians urge pet owners to seek immediate treatment for any suspected exposure.
