Colorado is continuing its efforts to implement the nation’s first Veterinary Professional Associate (VPA) role, a midlevel practitioner position approved by voters in 2024 to improve access to Veterinary care. A major issue under consideration is who will oversee credentialing and licensing examinations for VPAs. Although the Colorado State Board of Veterinary Medicine initially selected the American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB), concerns arose after the organization passed a resolution declining to endorse the VPA role until additional regulatory safeguards are established.
The board is also still developing rules regarding scope of practice, supervision, prescribing authority, and liability. Meanwhile, questions remain about accreditation of VPA educational programs and whether graduates will be able to practice outside Colorado. Supporters view the VPA as a solution to Veterinary workforce shortages, while critics argue the role could compromise patient care and diminish the Veterinary profession. The debate continues as Colorado moves forward with implementation.
