Taylor & Francis has published the first Plain Language Summary of Publication (PLSP) in Veterinary research, marking a significant step toward making scientific discoveries more accessible to a wider audience. Published in the journal Veterinary Quarterly, the summary explains research identifying a genetic change in the SLAMF1 gene that increases a dog’s risk of developing canine atopic dermatitis, a common chronic skin condition.
PLSPs are open-access, peer-reviewed summaries written in clear, non-technical language and supported by graphics, allowing Veterinary professionals, breeders, pet owners, and other non-specialists to better understand important research findings. Originally introduced in medical journals by Taylor & Francis in 2023, PLSPs have become a recognized tool for improving scientific communication. Industry leaders believe their adoption in Veterinary medicine will enhance evidence-based decision-making, improve communication across the animal healthcare community, and ultimately benefit animal welfare by making research findings easier to understand and apply in real-world settings.
