Mat-Su College in Alaska is launching the state’s first vet tech program in the fall of 2024, and they are seeking applicants. Dr. Judith Montalbano, a professor and long-time veterinarian, initiated the program due to Alaska being the only state without a vet tech program. The state faces a shortage of both veterinarians and vet techs.
The two-and-a-half-year program, created over a decade, will combine classroom and hands-on instruction with practicums in Veterinary offices. Only 16 students will be accepted, and applications must be submitted by March 1. Successful graduates will earn an Associate of Applied Science degree and be eligible for a national licensing exam. The program aims to address the shortage of vet techs, improving efficiency in Veterinary practices.
