A rare outbreak of equine influenza has struck England’s New Forest National Park, marking the area’s first reported cases in approximately 30 years and resulting in the deaths of at least 10 ponies. Equine influenza is a highly contagious viral respiratory disease that spreads primarily through the air or direct contact between horses. Veterinary officials are advising the public not to approach or move affected ponies to avoid causing additional stress or spreading the virus.
Horse riders are encouraged to keep their distance from free-roaming ponies and avoid allowing horses to drink from communal water troughs. In response to the outbreak, organizers of the upcoming New Forest and Hampshire County Show have strengthened biosecurity measures, requiring all horses, ponies, and donkeys attending the event to be fully vaccinated against equine influenza and undergo health checks before entry. The outbreak highlights the importance of vaccination, disease surveillance, and rapid biosecurity measures to protect equine populations.
