Veterinary researchers at the University of Florida have confirmed the first molecularly verified cases of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) in lemurs, demonstrating how a virus that usually causes only cold sores in humans can be fatal to certain nonhuman primates. The report described four privately owned lemurs that developed severe neurological disease, including seizures and encephalitis, and all died despite antiviral treatment. One case may have been linked to a public lemur yoga class, where frequent human contact increased the risk of transmission.
Researchers emphasize that humans can unknowingly spread dangerous pathogens to wildlife that lack natural immunity. Accredited zoos have largely prevented such infections through strict biosecurity measures, including mask use and controlled interactions. The findings underscore the importance of educating caretakers, limiting unnecessary human contact, and considering HSV-1 as a possible diagnosis in lemurs with neurological symptoms or oral ulcers. The study also highlights the broader role viruses can play in wildlife health and evolution.
