The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine has announced a $72 million expansion of its Small Animal Hospital to address growing demand for Veterinary care and educate more veterinarians. The project will add nearly 20,000 square feet of new space and renovate 25,000 square feet of existing facilities. Planned improvements include expanded emergency and critical care services, a dedicated feline health center, updated teaching and office space, and redesigned client areas. The college currently enrolls about 100 Veterinary students annually and expects to increase enrollment by up to 25% once the expansion is complete.
Each year, the Veterinary Medical Center treats approximately 38,000 animals, including companion animals, livestock, wildlife, zoo animals, and exotics, many referred for specialized care. Funded through state support, university resources, and private donations, construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with most of the project expected to open in spring 2029 while hospital operations continue throughout construction.
