An electrical fire destroyed the mobile Veterinary clinic of Staten Island veterinarian Dr. Peter Astarbi, threatening a practice that has served the community for 25 years. The fire, captured by Astarbi’s doorbell camera in late June, destroyed his 2003 Ford van outside his Annadale home.
Astarbi said he was underinsured and estimates repairing the vehicle would cost about $50,000, while purchasing a used replacement could cost approximately $150,000. Without the mobile clinic, he cannot perform life-saving surgeries and must rely on limited space in his personal vehicle for house calls, including visits to pet owners unable to leave their homes.
The community has responded with significant support. A GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $45,000, with current and former clients reaching out to help. Colleagues described Astarbi as exceptionally dedicated, citing his willingness to assist animals ranging from household pets to injured wildlife.
