The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued an Emergency Use Authorization for Simparica TRIO to treat New World screwworm infestations in dogs and puppies. The authorization, announced August 13, comes as NWS has been detected in specific areas of Texas and New Mexico, although the FDA says most U.S. dogs currently face low exposure risk.
Dogs living in or traveling to affected areas should be monitored for signs including visible maggots and foul odors from wounds or body openings. Infested animals require immediate Veterinary care. The FDA determined that Simparica TRIO may be effective against NWS and that its potential benefits outweigh known risks when used as authorized. However, the drug is not authorized to prevent NWS.
Simparica TRIO, manufactured by Zoetis, was originally approved in 2020 for heartworm, flea, and tick-related indications. Because its isoxazoline ingredient can cause neurological adverse reactions, the medication remains available only by Veterinary prescription.
