The AVMA notes that celebrity and pop-culture exposure has historically increased demand for certain breeds. However, it emphasizes that dogs are a long-term commitment and that the best match depends on factors such as living space, work schedules, activity levels, family responsibilities, and other pets.
Prospective owners should also consider the full cost of care, including Veterinary services, food, grooming, training, and unexpected medical expenses. Breed-specific needs matter as well. Samoyeds, for example, require substantial exercise, social interaction, and regular grooming. The AVMA also recommends choosing responsible breeders or reputable shelters and rescues, avoiding impulse purchases or surprise gifts, and consulting a Veterinary team before bringing a dog home.
