Wisconsin is seeking to address its shortage of rural veterinarians through a new student loan repayment program designed to attract and retain professionals who treat farm animals. Large-animal veterinarians often spend much of their workday traveling between farms while managing demanding emergency and on-call schedules. These challenges, combined with lower earning potential compared with other areas of Veterinary medicine, can make rural practice less attractive to new graduates.
Wisconsin Act 177, which took effect April 4, creates a loan repayment grant program offering eligible veterinarians up to $25,000 annually and $100,000 total toward educational debt. Grants are exempt from state income taxes. Veterinarians must be in their final year of Veterinary school or within seven years of graduation and commit at least half their services to farm animals in rural communities. However, lawmakers must still fund the program through the state budget before grants can be distributed.
