The ASPCA has launched a New World Screwworm Direct Support Grant offering up to $500,000 in emergency funding to help protect dogs, cats, and equines from the parasite. Funding is available to eligible organizations in states with USDA-designated infestations and neighboring states and will be distributed on a rolling basis through October 31, 2026, or until funds are exhausted.
The initiative follows the northward spread of New World screwworm through Central America and Mexico since 2023 and recent U.S. cases in Texas and New Mexico. The ASPCA says expanding access to long-acting parasiticides, particularly within shelters and rescues, can help prevent infestations and reduce potential hosts.
Qualifying organizations can receive up to $45,000 for prevention and treatment medications, $5,000 for Veterinarian of Record expenses, and $750 per infected animal for Veterinary assessment and treatment. Applicants must have a veterinarian overseeing prevention and treatment activities.
