CBD products for pets have grown increasingly popular, but veterinarians caution that scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness remains limited. Research has focused primarily on arthritis-related pain, seizures, atopic dermatitis, and anxiety in dogs. Some small studies suggest CBD may reduce seizure days, pain, or itching, but results have been inconsistent, and evidence supporting its use for anxiety is weak.
Safety also remains a concern. Although CBD is probably safe for most healthy dogs, long-term studies are lacking. Potential side effects include elevated liver enzymes, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, excessive drooling, and wobbliness. CBD can also interact with certain medications.
Another concern is product quality because pet CBD products are not FDA approved or regulated, meaning their contents may differ from their labels or contain contaminants. Veterinarians recommend consulting a veterinarian before giving CBD to a pet, avoiding human CBD products, and selecting products with independent certificates of analysis.
