Fourteen police K-9s from law enforcement agencies across Kansas competed in the third annual K-9 Games at the Stormont Vail Events Center in Topeka. The event showcased the skills and training of working dogs while raising money for Special Olympics Kansas.
Each K-9 competed alongside its regular handler in three events designed to test speed, agility, and coordination. Challenges included a speed dash, a rope-dodging course, and an exercise requiring dogs to jump through open windows and into truck beds to apprehend a simulated culprit.
Shawnee County Sheriff Brian Hill said the competition gives the public an opportunity to appreciate the training and dangerous work performed by police dogs. Although admission was free, proceeds and donations benefited Special Olympics Kansas, continuing a longstanding relationship between law enforcement and the organization. Hill said community support has been strong and believes the K-9 Games could eventually expand into a larger, multiday event similar to competitions held elsewhere in the country.
