The American Pet Products Association’s 2026 Cat Report shows U.S. cat ownership continuing to expand and diversify. In 2025, 53 million households owned cats, representing 39% of U.S. households and a 5% increase from the previous year.
Multi-cat households are becoming more common. Two-cat ownership increased 7% year over year, while households with three or more cats rose 7% annually and 45% since 2018. Owners are also spending more on nutrition, averaging $337.53 on cat food in 2025, a 9% increase.
Gen Z represented 22% of cat owners, up 10%, and reported stronger emotional connections with their cats than older generations. Men accounted for 43% of cat owners, while Gen Z male ownership increased 27%.
Among male cat owners, households with at least three cats have increased 117% since 2018. APPA says these trends reflect growing engagement with feline nutrition, health, enrichment, personalization, and companionship.
