The World Small Animal Veterinary Association has released its 2026 Global Dental Guidelines, providing updated, evidence-based recommendations for preventing, diagnosing, and treating oral and dental diseases in companion animals. The guidelines are designed to increase the knowledge and confidence of Veterinary professionals while improving dental care and patient outcomes.
Building on WSAVA’s 2019 edition, the new guidelines reflect advances in Veterinary dentistry and add information on dental and maxillofacial trauma, juvenile pathology, ergonomics, and the role of Veterinary nurses and technicians. The section addressing radiographic interpretation has also been expanded.
Additional topics include common dental conditions, diagnostic procedures, treatment options, anesthesia and pain management, nutrition, and home dental care. The guidelines emphasize the connection between oral health and overall animal welfare while also addressing potential risks associated with anesthesia-free dentistry.
WSAVA says the updated resource is intended to help Veterinary professionals strengthen their dental knowledge and provide care that contributes to healthier, happier companion animals.
