A nonprofit Veterinary clinic in Barboursville, West Virginia, is rebuilding after its former manager admitted to embezzling more than $624,000. Jerod Vannatter, who managed Help for Animals and was considered family by staff, pleaded guilty to federal money laundering charges. He admitted taking $624,599.86 from the clinic and losing the money through online gambling. Vannatter faces up to 10 years in prison, a potential $250,000 fine, and restitution.
Current clinic manager Vicki Graham said the organization was left approximately $200,000 in debt and had to work extensively to recover while continuing to serve clients without disruption. Staff members rallied around the clinic’s mission, determined not to let the financial loss define the organization. Surgery director Aurelia Ward expressed frustration over how the stolen funds could have supported employees, equipment, and animals whose owners could not afford care. The clinic has since implemented additional safeguards while continuing its community mission.
