The University of Maryland-Eastern Shore (UMES) will open its School of Veterinary Medicine in June 2027, becoming Maryland’s only Veterinary school and the nation’s first at a public historically Black college or university. The school recently received preliminary accreditation assurance from the American Veterinary Medical Association, allowing student enrollment to begin. Its inaugural class will include 100 students, with half coming from Maryland.

The accelerated three-year program will emphasize hands-on clinical experience, preparing graduates to enter the workforce one year earlier than traditional programs. Rather than operating a teaching hospital, UMES will partner with regional Veterinary practices to provide clinical training. The curriculum will also incorporate a One Health approach, recognizing connections between human, animal, and environmental health.

School leaders hope to address veterinarian shortages, particularly in rural mixed-animal practices, while increasing diversity within the profession. Partnerships with historically Black colleges and regional universities will help expand educational opportunities for aspiring veterinarians.
