The Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI) released its 2026 Human-Animal Bond Benchmark Survey, revealing growing pet ownership and widespread recognition of its health benefits. According to the survey, 74% of Americans own pets, 15% plan to acquire one, and 98% of pet owners experience at least one health benefit. In addition, 97% of Americans recognize research-backed benefits, including reduced loneliness, depression, and stress.

The survey found that awareness of these benefits encourages responsible pet care, with 91% of owners reporting greater motivation to maintain their pets’ health through Veterinary visits and other measures. Stronger human-animal bonds were also associated with increased preventive care.

Americans overwhelmingly support pet-friendly public spaces, businesses, and housing policies. However, prospective owners face obstacles, including ownership costs, housing restrictions, and balancing pet care with other responsibilities. HABRI emphasized the importance of creating pet-inclusive communities and helping owners prepare for successful, lasting relationships with their animals.
