Tulsa Animal Services is preparing to relocate to a new, larger facility after years of overcrowding and operational challenges at its current shelter. The existing facility has operated at capacity for more than a year, housing approximately 150 to 175 animals indoors, with additional animals outside. Aging infrastructure has also created difficulties, including power outages that have forced staff to perform surgeries by flashlight.
The new shelter, located on East 36th Street North near Sheridan Road, will provide 8,000 additional square feet, improved kennels designed to reduce animal stress, dedicated meet-and-greet areas, a secure garage, and backup generator power.
Deputy Director Colton Jones hopes to complete the move by the end of 2026, although construction details remain unfinished. Meanwhile, shelter officials are encouraging community members to adopt or foster animals to ease overcrowding. Jones also emphasized the importance of spaying and neutering to prevent unwanted litters and reduce shelter populations.
