Aiming for a Society That is Better for Both Animals and People Through Veterinary-Engineering Collaboration: the “Quality of all Lives” Project

Okayama University of Science is pioneering a new interdisciplinary field called Veterinary Medical Engineering, bringing together Veterinary medicine and engineering to develop technologies that improve the wellbeing of both animals and people. One of the project’s first innovations is Makiyoru ONE, a lightweight bandage pressure measurement device that helps Veterinary nursing students learn proper bandaging techniques by providing real-time pressure data. The technology allows students to compare their performance with expert benchmarks, improving both learning efficiency and confidence.

The broader Quality of All Lives initiative also includes the development of animal-specific monitoring systems, technologies to support livestock production, Veterinary education, and clinical care, as well as solutions to help pet owners safely evacuate with their animals during natural disasters. Guided by the principles of One Wellbeing, the project aims to strengthen collaboration between Veterinary and engineering professionals while advancing smarter animal healthcare, fostering innovation, and improving quality of life for animals, their caregivers, and society as a whole.
