An 11-year old Florida boy has been recognized after spending more than 100 hours reading to homeless pets at the Jacksonville Humane Society. Nehemiah Turner volunteered alongside his grandmother for more than two years through the shelter’s Pawsitive Reading program, becoming the first child to reach the 100 hour milestone. Turner said reading creates a calm and comforting environment for the animals by reducing stress and barking.
He especially enjoyed reading to dogs, hoping the quiet interaction would help them relax and improve their chances of finding permanent homes. During every visit, he read to a dog named Hopper until the dog was finally adopted after spending more than a year at the shelter. Jacksonville Humane Society CEO Lawrence Nicolas praised Turner’s dedication, saying his generosity demonstrates how simple acts of kindness can inspire others. Turner’s commitment has become a heartwarming example of how young volunteers can positively impact animal welfare and encourage pet adoption.
