The American Pet Products Association’s 2026 Cat Report shows U.S. cat ownership continuing to expand, driven largely by Gen Z and male owners. In 2025, 53 million U.S. households owned cats, representing 39% of households and a 5% increase from 2024. Multi-cat households are also rising, with ownership of three or more cats up 45% since 2018. Average annual spending on cat food increased 9% to $337.53.
Men now represent 43% of cat owners, while Gen Z male ownership jumped 27% year over year. Among men, ownership of three or more cats has increased 117% since 2018, alongside growing interest in premium nutrition, mixers, and toppers. Gen Z accounts for 22% of cat owners, up 10% annually, and reports particularly strong emotional bonds with cats. APPA says these emerging consumers are reshaping feline care through personalization, varied purchasing channels, premium products, and increased spending on nutrition and enrichment.
