Bexar County Reports First Dog Rabies Case in More Than a Decade, Health Officials Say

Bexar County, Texas, has reported its first confirmed case of rabies in a dog in more than a decade amid a significant increase in wildlife cases. A Husky mix tested positive for rabies on August 18 after developing concerning behavioral and neurological symptoms. The dog had killed a baby skunk near its owner’s home in late July, but the encounter was not reported at the time.

Health officials offered rabies treatment to people and pets potentially exposed to the infected dog. The case comes as San Antonio and Bexar County experience a wildlife rabies outbreak. Officials reported 22 wildlife cases during June and July 2026, compared with only two to three during the same period in 2024 and 2025. Authorities are urging pet owners to maintain current rabies vaccinations, prevent pets from roaming, avoid contact with wildlife, report animal encounters, and seek immediate medical attention following possible rabies exposure.
