The Rural Veterinary Workforce Act is bipartisan legislation introduced by Representatives Adrian SmithJohn LarsonMichelle Fischbach, and Jimmy Panetta, with a Senate companion bill from Senators Mike Crapo and Tina Smith. The bill aims to address the critical shortage of Veterinary services in rural communities by removing federal taxes on loan repayments made under the Veterinary Medicine Loan Repayment Program (VMLRP).
Currently, these repayments are taxed, unlike those under the National Health Service Corps for human health professionals. By making VMLRP payments tax-exempt, the bill seeks to boost recruitment and retention of veterinarians in federally designated shortage areas. This is crucial for maintaining the health of livestock, the safety of the food supply, and the strength of rural economies. Supported by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the act is designed to ensure better access to Veterinary care in underserved areas while making the profession more financially viable for young veterinarians.
