The CDC is urging Americans to protect themselves from mosquito bites as West Nile virus season has started earlier and more intensely than usual. As of June 30, 2026, the agency confirmed at least 48 cases, including 38 severe infections—far above the typical average of about 10 cases reported by the end of June. The virus has been detected in 23 states, with Arizona experiencing the largest outbreak. Maricopa County, home to Phoenix, has reported 29 cases and four deaths.
Health officials recommend using insect repellent containing DEET, wearing long, loose-fitting clothing, repairing window screens, eliminating standing water where mosquitoes breed, and avoiding outdoor activities at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. While many infections cause no symptoms or only mild illness, severe cases can lead to life-threatening inflammation of the brain or spinal cord. Older adults and people with weakened immune systems face the greatest risk of serious complications.
