Clemson University and South Carolina leaders celebrated a historic milestone with the groundbreaking of the Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine, the state’s first veterinary college. Named after Senator Harvey S. Peeler Jr., a Clemson alumnus and long-time advocate for Veterinary education, the college addresses a critical shortage of veterinarians in South Carolina, where many counties have fewer than five practicing professionals.
Scheduled to open in Fall 2026, the college will enroll 80 students annually, offering a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Located near Clemson’s Equine Center, the six-building complex will feature cutting-edge facilities for hands-on learning, research, and community service. The college aims to prepare “day-one-ready” veterinarians while strengthening ties between animal and human health. Senator Peeler, a cattle farmer and chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, emphasized the college’s significance for education, agriculture, and the state’s economy. Clemson University President Jim Clements praised the collaborative effort behind this transformative initiative.
